This volume contains the articles presented at the 6th International Symposium on Foundationsof Informationand KnowledgeSystems (FoIKS 2010)which was held in So?a, Bulgaria during February 15 19, 2010. The FoIKS symposia provide a biennial forum for presenting and discussing theoreticalandappliedresearchoninformationandknowledgesystems.Thegoal is to bring together researchers with an interest in this subject, share research experiences, promote collaboration and identify new issues and directions for future research. FoIKS 2010 solicited original contributions dealing with any foundational aspects of information and knowledge systems. This included submissions that apply ideas, theories or methods from speci?c disciplines to information and knowledge systems. Examples of such disciplines are discrete mathematics, logic and algebra, model theory, information theory, complexity theory, algorithmics and computation, statistics, and optimization. Previous FoIKS symposia were held in Pisa (Italy) in 2008, Budapest (Hungary) in 2006, Vienna (Austria) in 2004, Schloss Salzau near Kiel (Germany) in 2002,and Burg/Spreewaldnear Berlin (Germany) in 2000.FoIKS took up the tradition of the conference series Mathematical Fundamentals of Database Systems (MFDBS), which initiated East West collaboration in the ?eld of database theory. Former MFDBS conferences were held in Rostock (Germany) in 1991, Visegrad (Hungary) in 1989, and Dresden (Germany) in 1987. The FoIKS symposia are a forum for intense discussions. Speakers are given su?cient time to present their ideas and results within the larger context of their research. Furthermore, participants are asked in advance to prepare a ?rst response to a contribution of another author.

This book provides an introduction to multistate event history analysis. It is an extension of survival analysis, in which a single terminal event (endpoint) is considered and the time-to-event is studied. Multistate models focus on life histories or trajectories, conceptualized as sequences of states and sequences of transitions between states. Life histories are modeled as realizations of continuous-time Markov processes. The model parameters, transition rates, are estimated from data on event counts and populations at risk, using the statistical theory of counting processes. The Comprehensive R Network Archive (CRAN) includes several packages for multistate modeling. This book is about Biograph. The package is designed to (a) enhance exploratory analysis of life histories and (b) make multistate modeling accessible. The package incorporates utilities that connect to several packages for multistate modeling, including survival, eha, Epi, mvna<, etm, mstate, msm, and TraMineR for sequence analysis. The book is a 'hands-on' presentation of Biograph and the packages listed. It is written from the perspective of the user. To help the user master the techniques and the software, a single data set is used to illustrate the methods and software. It is the subsample of the German Life History Survey, which was also used by Blossfeld and Rohwer in their popular textbook on event history modeling. Another data set, the Netherlands Family and Fertility Survey, is used to illustrate how Biograph can assist in answering questions on life paths of cohorts and individuals. The book is suitable as a textbook for graduate courses on event history analysis and introductory courses on competing risks and multistate models. It may also be used as a self-study book. The R code used in the book is available online. Frans Willekens is affiliated with the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR) in Rostock, Germany. He is Emeritus Professor of Demography at the University of Groningen, a Honorary Fellow of the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI) in the Hague, and a Research Associate of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), Laxenburg, Austria. He is a member of Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). He has contributed to the modeling and simulation of life histories, mainly in the context of population forecasting.

The ?rst FoIKS symposium was held in Burg, Spreewald (Germany) in 2000, and the second FoIKS symposium was held in SalzauCastle(Germany)in2002.FormerMFDBSconferenceswereheldinDr- den (Germany) in 1987, Visegr ad (Hungary) in 1989, and in Rostock (Germany) in 1991. Proceedings of these previous events were published by Springer-Verlag as volumes 305, 364, 495, 1762, and 2284 of the LNCS series, respectively. In addition the FoIKS symposium was intended to be a forum for intensive discussions. For this reason the time slots for long and short contributions were 50 and 30 minutes, respectively, followed by 20 and 10 minutes for discussions, respectively. Furthermore, participants were asked in advance to prepare to act as correspondents for the contributions of other authors. There were also special sessions for the presentation and discussion of open research problems.
